What Is the Model Context Protocol (MCP) - And Why Your Business Should Care
Every business that wants AI to do more than answer generic questions hits the same wall: the AI needs access to your systems. 1. Tools - Actions the AI Can Take
Tools are functions the AI model can call to perform actions: looking up a customer, creating a ticket, sending an email, processing a refund. The AI decides which tool to call based on the user's request and the tool descriptions. Tools are model-controlled - the AI reasons about when and how to use them.
The quality of tool descriptions is critical. Minimal descriptions like "retrieves customer information" lead to unreliable tool selection when multiple similar tools are available. Effective descriptions include input formats, example queries, edge cases, and clear boundaries explaining when to use this tool versus alternatives.
2. Resources - Data the AI Can Read
Resources expose read-only data to the AI: documentation hierarchies, database schemas, issue summaries, configuration files. They are application-controlled - the host application decides which resources to include in the AI's context. Resources reduce the need for the AI to make exploratory tool calls by giving it visibility into what data is available upfront.
3. Prompts - Pre-built Workflows
Prompts are pre-crafted, high-quality instructions for common workflows - formatting a document, generating a report, following a specific analysis pattern. They are user-controlled - the user selects which prompt to apply. Think of them as templates that encode best practices.

Before MCP, every AI integration was a one-off project. MCP turns tool integration into a configuration task. Community-maintained MCP servers already exist for popular platforms - Jira, GitHub, Slack, databases, and many more. - Clear tool descriptions with input formats, example queries, and boundary explanations - the AI uses these to decide which tool to call
- No functional overlap between tools - ambiguous or near-identical descriptions cause misrouting
- Structured error responses that distinguish transient errors (retry), validation errors (fix input), and permission errors (escalate) rather than generic failure messages
- Scoped tool sets - give each agent 4–5 focused tools rather than access to everything, reducing decision complexity
- Content catalogues as resources - expose available data upfront so the AI does not need exploratory calls to discover what exists
MCP in Practice: Real Integration Patterns
Customer Support Integration
An MCP server wraps your customer database, order management, and refund processing. The AI agent accesses customers through a `get_customer` tool, orders through `lookup_order`, and processes refunds through `process_refund`. Each tool has distinct descriptions and structured error responses. A programmatic hook enforces that refunds above a threshold automatically escalate to a human reviewer.
Developer Productivity
MCP servers connect AI coding assistants to project management tools, documentation, and deployment systems. A developer can ask the AI to check the status of related tickets, review the deployment pipeline, and draft release notes - all using standardised MCP tool calls rather than manual context switching between platforms.
Document Processing Pipeline
An MCP server provides tools for reading documents, extracting structured data, and writing results to a database. The AI agent processes incoming documents using JSON schemas for validation, retries with specific error feedback when extraction fails, and routes low-confidence extractions to human review.
